Love at First Turn

Midweek winter days at Alpental (Snoqualmie Pass) are dreamy. I’ve always thought that looking down from the top of Chair Two was like gazing into Switzerland. I used to say that long before ever visiting Switzerland. Once I did, I knew it was true.

I’m the girl who carries weights of ridiculousness on her shoulders. The minute I step into the mountain air, those dumbbells become weightless.

This is the view I enjoy forty minutes from my front door. I can name the lakes, I’ve climbed the peaks, walked the trails, snowshoed the winter routes and chased sunsets back to the trailhead. Just seeing it now takes those weights away again.

I remember the first time I heard this quote, Christmas Day 2011. It’s not a terribly original three sentences to live by, as it’s widely promoted all over the Internet. It is, however, the thirty words that inspired me to adjust my life.

I’d been thinking about a personal blog for a while and considered a 360-day photo blog, a travel blog, a Northwest journal, you name it. Then I went on vacation, nearly a full year after first hearing Matt Damon utter the above phrase in the movie, and heard the words Chasing Sunday strung together in a sentence. I paused. I knew I was chasing Sunday.

So like the predictable 45% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, I made my first one. Start chasing Sunday every day, every week, every year.
